The origins of Leashless Brewing can be traced back to when the founder, John, was a child, growing up a mile away from the beach in the sleepy beach town of Carpinteria. Initially afraid of the ocean as a child, he fell in love with the Pacific Ocean in his teens, and by 16, he was a certified scuba diver exploring the coastline and the Channel Islands. In the winter of 1994, he caught the surfing bug and fell in love with Rincon and Pacific Beach Point. As his love for the ocean grew deeper, so did his desire to live a natural and healthy lifestyle.

Fast forward a few decades, and John had completed a term in the USMC reserves, earned two Master’s degrees, had lived, worked and surfed in the South Pacific, Caribbean, conducted fieldwork/surf trips to Panama, Costa Rica, and Nicaragua all before finding himself living outside of D.C. with his wife, Leila. It was then that John and Leila learned that it wasn’t enough to eat healthy if the food wasn’t certified organic, and so they made the conscious decision to eat as much organic food as possible. It was around the same time that John had won his fair share of amateur brewing awards from competitions like the Master Championship of Amateur Brewing that he began to work on the business plan to open an organic brewery near his hometown. Ventura was chosen because of its proximity to both Los Angeles and Santa Barbara and because of its beach vibe and great surf.

Organic options were limited in the planning stages, but John was committed to incorporating all of his ideals into this venture: his love of Belgian-style beers, surfing a longboard leashless with style and grace, hosting parties, and being organic. His goal was, and still is, to use the brewery and its beers to help turn others onto an organic lifestyle, one pint of organic craft beer at a time.

Like many stories, this one is written daily with the efforts of Team Leashless and our fans. We are constantly striving to make the best organic craft beer possible. In some cases, we spend months looking for one ingredient that can make our beers better. It’s not easy being organic, but we see no other way to be a truly environmentally-conscious, sustainably-minded brewery and use conventional materials. Organic beer existed for centuries and Leashless Brewing will be part of its return.

Leashless Brewing is founded on four simple, yet major, principles that govern who we are, and why we do what we do!

Sustainability

We live on a planet with a finite amount of resources which we can utilize for our benefit, and for that of all living things, and Nature has given us the tools to live and excel in our environment while minimizing the impact of our actions on our environment. At Leashless Brewing, we believe that being an organic producer of craft beer is the basic foundation for being sustainable and promoting sustainability. We will use our organic craft beer products to promote sustainability, one glass of organic craft beer at a time. As a company, we intend to incorporate as many practices, technologies, and ways of thinking that help us achieve our growth while minimizing our impact on the environment!

Community

We at Leashless Brewing highly value the importance in developing strong ties with the communities in which we conduct our business. We believe it is important to build strong ties with local organizations whose values are similar to ours, thereby helping to promote sustainability initiatives everywhere we sell our beer. Ultimately, we want to create a global community that promotes sustainability and the organic lifestyle beyond drinking organic craft beer.

Commitment

We are committed not only to making the best organic craft beer possible, but also to implementing sustainability as much as we can in all we do. We are committed to working with our partners to help make this world, this place we call home, a little cleaner, a little better than it was yesterday. We want to use organic craft beer to empower positive change in all our customers, vendors, and partners. We are committed to empowering our employees to make positive change as they identify non-profits to work with. We are committed to our environment. We are committed to our employees. We are committed to our craft. We are committed to you. We are committed, period!

Celebration

We are firm believers that there is always a reason to celebrate life every day! And we believe that if you’re going to celebrate, you may as well be as environmentally-friendly as possible! So whether you want to celebrate passing a test, surviving another day in the office, or just enjoying another beautiful sunset, we want to be there for you! Life is too short and life is filled with too many amazing things. So go celebrate today, tomorrow, and every day. Show life that it is worth it and live, love, and drink organic craft beer!

Welcome to the Inspiration Room!

This is where we get inspired to make unique organic libations that we hope will inspire you, our fans, to be a little more environmentally-conscious!

All our beers are crafted with 100% certified organic grains, organic yeast, and organic hops! In fact, almost all our ingredients are certified organic. If it can't be certified organic, it is approved for use in making certified organic beer. We're not cutting corners here, but let's face it. Some ingredients, water for example, are near impossible to get certified organic. In the end, our ingredients are GMO-free, and are cultivated without the use of harmful pesticides and inorganic fertilizers. Our beer is natural and better for the environment, healthier for our hardest working employees (yeast), and possibly better for us too!

We operate a 10 BBL brewhouse with mostly 20 BBL tanks to craft small batches of organic goodness. Armed with a high efficiency R.O. unit, we can craft high quality organic beer with as small an impact on the local water supply as possible. All our brewing waste, organic spent grains, organic spent yeast, and trub from the kettle are collected and given to local farms to promote organic agriculture.

We have one 10 BBL tank, and a series of policies, dedicated solely to crafting organic gluten-reduced beers. We understand the implications of cross-contamination and want our gluten-sensitive fans to feel as safe as possible when visiting us. In fact, all our gluten-reduced beers are tested using the R5 competitive ELISA test to make sure the gluten content is less than 10ppm. If it's not less than 10ppm, we will not serve it as gluten-reduced organic beer.

Feeling inspired yet? We hope so. And if not, come over and try our organic libations. Maybe then we can inspire you. Maybe you can inspire us?
